Finding your First Credit Card

Choosing a credit card company, particularly if you are a first time credit card user, can be a tricky business. However, as is the case with all important decisions, some time, effort and research will steer you in the direction of the best option for you.

To begin with, ask around family and friends for their recommendations. The people close to you are likely to give you advice that suits your character and your bank balance. If this fails, go online and find a credit card comparison to give you an idea of what might work for you.

If it is your first credit card, you are likely to be a student and only need the card to build up a credit history. If this is the case, remember to opt only for options designed to suit a very low income. Often, banks will offer a card specifically for students, and if this is the case, you would be well advised to stick with options like this one.

As a young, credit card first timer, you won't have a credit history yet. Bear in mind that in the future, applying for cards will involve giving a detailed report on your spending habits and the way in which you repay debts, so if you want a proper credit card one day, you will attempt to keep your record clean.

In short, when applying for your first card, you will, more than likely, only be offered a student account with a very low spending limit. The purpose of these cards is simply to allow you to build up a credit history so that one day you will be able to order a real card with a more substantial limit.
